Computer graphics
the art and science of creating and displaying images using digital technologies

Design
computer graphics are used to aid in the design process, to share information between colleagues, to support the production of objects and to communicate ideas

Applications
many disciplines rely on computer graphics

Graphic representations
computer graphics can generally be divided into two categories, or methods of representing graphic objects
  • vector graphics are made of mathematically defined objects
  • bitmap graphics are made of a grid of pixels
Primary elements of form
the set of basic building blocks (or vocabulary) that is used to construct graphic objects consists of
  • point
  • line
  • plane
  • volume
  • space-time
Color concepts
a color system (also called a color space) is used to describe and reproduce colors
  • gamut is the range of colors that are available in an image or output process
  • rgb color model is an additive system based on light used by monitors; the combination of the primary colors, red, green and blue add up to make white
  • rgb bitplanes represent a color image by combining red, green and blue light
  • cmy color model is a subtractive system based on pigment used for printing; the combination of the primary colors, cyan, magenta and yellow produces black by subtracting out all light
  • cmyk color model adds black to the cmy model to compensate for the lack of purity in cmy inks

Graphic programs
graphic software can be categorized into several different types, that are often used together in graphic design projects
  • desktop publishing
  • drawing or illustration
  • digital imaging
  • 3d modeling
  • rendering
  • animation
An example
an object created in a 3d modeling system, rendered, edited in a digital imaging system and multiple images composed
